Chefman's TurboFry basket fryers and the Toast-Air toaster-oven hybrid cook close to true-to-dial. They have moderate airflow and large baskets for the price, so they tend to be the home cook's first air fryer rather than a precision tool — a generic recipe lands correctly on a TurboFry without adjustment.

Working with Chefman

  • The TurboFry 8 Qt is wide rather than tall — single-layer foods crisp evenly without needing to shake mid-cook.
  • The Toast-Air toaster-oven mode runs the fan slower than air-fryer mode; switch to air-fryer for anything that should crisp.

FAQ about Chefman air fryers

Why does my Chefman TurboFry cook at the same temperature the chart shows?
Chefman TurboFry basket fryers cook true-to-dial — moderate airflow and average insulation mean the chart applies no temperature offset and no time adjustment. The Toast-Air toaster-oven hybrid is the only exception: its air-fryer mode matches basket calibration, but its toaster-oven mode runs the fan slower and behaves more like a small convection oven (add 2-3 minutes for crisp-dependent recipes).
Do I need to preheat my Chefman TurboFry?
Roughly 90 seconds — Chefman's small to mid-size chamber climbs fast. The 2 Qt TurboFry climbs even faster (about 60 seconds) because the chamber is tiny. The 8 Qt wide-basket TurboFry needs the full 2 minutes because it has more chamber mass to bring up to temperature. On cooks longer than 8 minutes you can skip preheat; on short cooks (frozen mozzarella sticks, shrimp, scallops) the preheat is worth the wait.
Is the Chefman TurboFry basket dishwasher-safe?
Yes — the basket and crisper tray on every TurboFry size (2 Qt, 4.5 Qt, 8 Qt) are dishwasher-safe on the top rack. The Toast-Air's wire rack and crumb tray are hand-wash only; the wire rack rusts faster after repeated dishwasher cycles because the chrome finish is thinner than on dedicated air-fryer racks. Hand-wash every few cycles on the TurboFry baskets too — extends the non-stick coating's life.
Why is the bottom layer staying pale on my Chefman TurboFry 8 Qt?
You've stacked the food. The 8 Qt is wide rather than tall — single-layer cooks crisp evenly, but two layers steam each other because Chefman's airflow is solid but not strong enough to push past stacking. Spread the food across the full basket width and the bottom layer crisps at the same rate as the top. If you're cooking for more than the 8 Qt holds in one layer, batch the cook rather than stacking.
Which Chefman model does the calibration on this page match?
Baseline is the TurboFry 4.5 Qt — the mainstream consumer Chefman. The 2 Qt TurboFry cooks 1-2 minutes faster on small batches because the chamber is much smaller. The 8 Qt TurboFry cooks identically when food is single-layer (it's wide, not deep). The Toast-Air hybrid matches basket calibration in air-fryer mode; switch out of air-fryer mode and the calibration no longer applies.
How many watts does a Chefman air fryer use?
Chefman's range is the widest of the basket brands — 1000–1700 W — because the model lineup spans single-serve compact to family-size wide-basket units. The 2 Qt TurboFry single-serve draws about 1000 W (smaller chamber and element). The mainstream 4.5 Qt TurboFry sits around 1500 W. The 8 Qt wide-basket family-size climbs to ~1700 W to heat the larger chamber to crisping temperatures.
