Refrigerator-tube cinnamon rolls (Pillsbury Grands! is the high-volume default) bake in 10 minutes at 320 °F (160 °C), no flip — the convection air gives a deeper golden top than the oven version while finishing in less than half the time. Single-layer on parchment with 0.5–1 inch gaps between rolls (they expand sideways during cook). Frost OFF-heat after a 2-minute cool so the glaze melts without running. Closer to a fresh-bakery roll than anything the oven instructions deliver, and ready before a cup of coffee finishes brewing.

Cooking cinnamon rolls differently?

Times and technique change when starting from frozen or reheating leftovers. Open the matching guide for the right temp, time and brand notes.

How to tell it’s done

Tops are deep golden brown and the sides have puffed clean of their neighbours (no doughy sticking-together). Tapping the centre with a finger meets a soft springy resistance, not a wet dough squish. A toothpick pushed into the dough between the spirals comes out clean of raw dough (a few sticky crumbs from the cinnamon-sugar layer are fine — wet batter on the toothpick means another 60–90 seconds). Underdone rolls look pale and feel heavy; overdone rolls darken to chestnut and the spiral edges crack into a dry crust.

Step-by-step method

  1. 1

    Prep

Bring ingredients close to room temperature. No oil — the rolls carry plenty of butter in the dough. Line the basket with parchment cut to size (corners snipped for airflow); the rendered sugar pools below and burns onto bare basket grate without it.

  2. 2

    Season

Season with the included frosting packet (apply after rolls have cooled ~2 minutes), extra ground cinnamon dusted on top before cooking, pinch of flaky sea salt on top before cooking (sets off the sweet), softened cream cheese mixed into the frosting (1 tbsp per packet — turns the white frosting into a richer cream-cheese glaze), chopped pecans or walnuts pressed into the tops before cooking, orange or lemon zest mixed into the frosting.

  3. 3

    Load

Arrange 1 tube refrigerator-style cinnamon rolls (pillsbury grands! ~17 oz / 5 rolls or 8-count regular ~12 oz), arranged in a single layer with 0.5–1 inch between rolls for best convection airflow.

  4. 4

    Cook

Set the air fryer to 320 °F (160 °C) and cook for 10 minutes total.

  5. 5

    Check & rest

Check the visual doneness cue and serve immediately for best texture.

  6. 6

    Store

Best eaten warm within an hour. Refrigerate frosted leftovers up to 3 days in an airtight container. Reheat at 300 °F for 2 minutes in the air fryer (or 15 seconds in the microwave for soft-only) — the air fryer brings back the crisp edges and re-melts the frosting top. Unfrosted rolls keep at room temperature 2 days; frost just before serving for the bakery-fresh look.

Watch out for

  • Use parchment under the rolls. Pillsbury Grands! rolls render a surprising amount of butter and brown sugar onto the basket during cooking — bare grate means a 15-minute scrub and a smoke-trigger on the next cook. Cut parchment to the basket bottom, snip the corners for airflow, lift cleanly when done.
  • Leave 0.5–1 inch between rolls. They expand sideways ~1.5× during cook — touching rolls steam-bond into a single slab where the inner edges stay raw and the outer edges over-brown. If your basket is small, cook in 2 batches of 4 rather than cramming 8.
  • Apply frosting OFF-heat after a 2-minute cool. Frosting on hot rolls liquefies and runs off the tops into the basket; frosting on warm (not hot) rolls melts just enough to glaze without running. The 2-minute cool is the sweet spot — any longer and the rolls cool past the glaze-melt point.
  • Brand caveat — Annie's mini-tubes and 'Cinnamon Mini Buns' cook in 6 minutes not 10 (smaller diameter, less dough mass). Trader Joe's Jumbo Cinnamon Rolls follow Grands! timing. Always check at the lower end of any range and pull on visual cue (golden top, puffed sides) rather than blindly trusting a timer.

FAQ about cinnamon rolls in an air fryer

What temperature should I cook cinnamon rolls at in an air fryer?
Cook cinnamon rolls at 320 °F (160 °C). The convection air at this temperature cooks the food gently — higher temperatures dry it out or scorch the surface.
How long do cinnamon rolls take in an air fryer?
Cinnamon rolls take 10 minutes at 320 °F (160 °C) with no flipping needed. Cook in a single layer for the air to circulate.
Do you need to flip cinnamon rolls in an air fryer?
No — cinnamon rolls cook evenly without flipping. The convection air reaches all sides simultaneously. Flipping is only needed for dense or thick foods where one side sits against the basket grate; this food does not benefit from it.
Do you need to preheat the air fryer for cinnamon rolls?
Preheating is optional for cinnamon rolls — most modern air fryers reach temperature in under 2 minutes and the food's total cook time already accounts for the ramp-up. If you do preheat, reduce the total time by 1–2 minutes and check earlier than usual.
Can I reheat leftover cinnamon rolls in an air fryer?
Yes. Reheat at 320 °F (160 °C) for 3 minutes. The reheat guide covers the full restore-the-crisp technique. Open the leftover cinnamon rolls reheat guide →
