Doneness
Tops are deep golden brown and the sides have puffed clean of their neighbours (no doughy sticking-together). Tapping the centre with a finger meets a soft springy resistance, not a wet dough squish. A toothpick pushed into the dough between the spirals comes out clean of raw dough (a few sticky crumbs from the cinnamon-sugar layer are fine — wet batter on the toothpick means another 60–90 seconds). Underdone rolls look pale and feel heavy; overdone rolls darken to chestnut and the spiral edges crack into a dry crust.
Oil & seasoning
No oil — the rolls carry plenty of butter in the dough. Line the basket with parchment cut to size (corners snipped for airflow); the rendered sugar pools below and burns onto bare basket grate without it.
Season with: the included frosting packet (apply after rolls have cooled ~2 minutes), extra ground cinnamon dusted on top before cooking, pinch of flaky sea salt on top before cooking (sets off the sweet), softened cream cheese mixed into the frosting (1 tbsp per packet — turns the white frosting into a richer cream-cheese glaze), chopped pecans or walnuts pressed into the tops before cooking, orange or lemon zest mixed into the frosting.
Watch out for
- Use parchment under the rolls. Pillsbury Grands! rolls render a surprising amount of butter and brown sugar onto the basket during cooking — bare grate means a 15-minute scrub and a smoke-trigger on the next cook. Cut parchment to the basket bottom, snip the corners for airflow, lift cleanly when done.
- Leave 0.5–1 inch between rolls. They expand sideways ~1.5× during cook — touching rolls steam-bond into a single slab where the inner edges stay raw and the outer edges over-brown. If your basket is small, cook in 2 batches of 4 rather than cramming 8.
- Apply frosting OFF-heat after a 2-minute cool. Frosting on hot rolls liquefies and runs off the tops into the basket; frosting on warm (not hot) rolls melts just enough to glaze without running. The 2-minute cool is the sweet spot — any longer and the rolls cool past the glaze-melt point.
- Brand caveat — Annie's mini-tubes and 'Cinnamon Mini Buns' cook in 6 minutes not 10 (smaller diameter, less dough mass). Trader Joe's Jumbo Cinnamon Rolls follow Grands! timing. Always check at the lower end of any range and pull on visual cue (golden top, puffed sides) rather than blindly trusting a timer.
