The top is golden and bubbling and the center is hot throughout (about 165 °F). A pale, un-bubbled top needs more time; a scorched top means it cooked too hot or too long.
Oil & seasoning
Butter the dish; brush a little melted butter over breadcrumbs so they brown.
Season with: sharp cheddar, butter, salt, black pepper, breadcrumbs.
Watch out for
- Boil the pasta just to al dente — it softens further in the bake.
- Use an oven-safe dish that fits the basket; loose pasta falls through the grate.
- Add breadcrumbs near the end if they brown too fast.
